HAPPY HOLIDAYS??!@##*^##

Well, Christmas has come and gone and we are looking forward to a new and hopefully prosperous New Year.  I purposely held off on mailing out this issue until after December cause like the song says, “If we can make it through December….”  Many folks love this time of year and I probably would too if not for a few things like; crowds, traffic, rude people, over commercialism, and CHINA !  Guess I should explain the last one.  First of all, they are obviously the only country on the planet that is allowed to produce stuff for us to purchase.  Secondly, they have devised a devious plan to overthrow our government by simply making us crazy..  Case in point,  I briefly felt the Holiday spirit and decided to put lights on the eaves of the house.  This was only a brief anomaly for me, however, it lasted long enough to purchase a bunch of traditional outside Christmas lights. Soooo, I began to install these “simple to install’ CHINESE MADE lights, thinking all along that since I am, after all, a master electrician, that this would take only a few minutes of my time and I would have a beautifully decorated home like all of my neighbors.  Anyway, as I am hanging upside down on my extremely pitched roof (keeps the snow from sticking),  I realize that the Chinese have done it again!!  The “simple to install” lights are designed to, if not drive you nuts, to at least assist you in falling off the aforementioned roof…. The problem is a design flaw (on purpose).  The clips that are supposed to attach to the shingles are 180 degrees inverted (backwards).  So, what do ya do?? Clip the lights so they are facing up the roof and you are viewing the base from the ground or staple on the fascia which requires hanging further over the edge!!

By the way, even the backwards way only works going one direction.   Ya have to twist the wiring around on each lamp when going the opposite direction of the power source.  Of course this means a disparity in spacing of the lights when going the opposite direction on the roofline.  The good news is that they come down really easy after the Holidays!!! (one time use).  Have a Happy New Year….You’ll be ready for a drink…

P.S.  My Christmas Present was Direct TV from Circuit City   I called for installation and  hook up and the gentleman answering my call was located in India .  I live in Port Orange , FL , U.S.A.   I’m tellin ya, it’s a conspiracy!!!!

EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT

It’s hard to find anything positive to report as it relates to the current administration’s views and policies toward American workers, especially those in unions. There are people out there everyday fighting for workers rights and there are some positive results, however, they are overshadowed by the more frequent employer abuses.

One such positive and newsworthy event took place on November 21, when Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. George Miller introduced the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1925 and H.R. 3619). Such a bill should not be necessary because the right to form and join unions was already recognized by the U.S. Government in1935 with the National Labor Relations Act. Then in 1948 the right to a voice at work was included in a Universal Declaration of Human Rights through the United Nations. “Everyone has the right to form and join trade unions for the protection of his interests,” the declaration says.

The Employee Free Choice Act will make card-check the standard method by which workers choose to form unions, provide mediation and arbitration for first contract disputes and establish stronger penalties when employers violate the law. Three Republican House members also sponsor the Employee Free Choice Act.

On December 10, in cities across the country, rallies and public hearings took place to educate legislators and the public regarding the struggles workers face when trying to form or join unions. I attended one such hearing and rally in Miami and federal, state and local legislators were represented, as well as many community leaders.

The majority of the public, including union members, is unaware to what extremes companies will go to suppress and discourage workers from forming and joining unions. For the first time in more than six decades Congressional leaders, state and local officials and other community leaders have joined the union movement to push for legislation to enable workers to join unions without employer harassment and interference.

The following are just a few examples of the employer abuses provided by Cornell University scholar Kate Bronfenbrenner in her report,”Uneasy Terrain”:

Almost all private-sector employers-(92 percent)-force employees to attend closed door meetings to hear anti-union propaganda when workers seek to form a union.

Eighty percent of employers require supervisors to attend training sessions on attacking unions.

Seventy-eight percent mandate supervisors to deliver anti-union messages to workers they oversee.

In 25 percent of organizing campaigns, employers illegally fire workers because they want to form a union.

Seventy-five percent hire outside consultants to run anti-union campaigns, often based on mass psychology and distorting the law.

Half threaten to shut down if employees join together in a union.

Even after employees successfully form a union, in one third of the instances, employers never negotiate a contract.

The laws have been on the books for decades and it shouldn’t take a new one for workers in this country to exercise their rights. If that’s what it takes, I’m glad there are still Congressional leaders who are willing to stand up with America ’s working families in their fight for justice in the work place.

Working families are encouraged to call their U.S. senators at 202-224-3121 and U.S. Representatives at 202-225-3121 and urge them to support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Our web-page address has been changed from Electricalcareer.net to Electricalcareer.org.  We also are advertising on the web with BellSouth.

For those of you who don’t know, the JATC has a new assistant/coordinator, Mary Chase.  Mary is in the office Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.   She is qualified to help when you call.  Please make her welcome.

The JATC has been focusing on additional training classes for our Journeymen.  We are in the process of scheduling OSHA 10/30 classes and will be looking into the new, 70E OSHA for Tele-Com.  These classes will be held on Saturdays.  Phil Whisenant, Olson Electric has agreed to teach these classes.  Todd Johnston, Electrical Tech Services has agreed to be our instructor for Environmental Controls, (Low Voltage).  Interested Journeymen should please contact the JATC to sign up so we can get a head count for ordering enough books for these classes.  Look for upcoming dates and fees.  I welcome all Journeymen to please feel free to call me with any suggestions or ideas for additional continuing education classes.  Anyone interested in teaching should contact me.  Our JATC is committed to TRAINING and we are making plans for many classes.

The new 2005 Code Books are now on sale.  Please call the JATC office at 386-257-1955 to place your orders for early discounts.
