Open Message to All Non-Union Electricians

The IBEW Strategy in 1891………..

The founding fathers of this great union understood over 100 years ago that in order to enhance a worker’s standard of living and provide a better future for himself and his family, there was one undeniable truth.  Every qualified electrical worker must be unified in order for their voice to be heard both politically and in the work place.

“We earnestly invite all workers belonging to our trade to come forward, join our ranks and help increase our numbers, until there shall be no one working at our trade outside of our Brotherhood….” portion of the 1891 preamble to the Constitution of the IBEW.

The above, stated in 1891 was either forgotten or ignored over the years and our trade has suffered the undisputable consequences.  As often times, with success, comes ignorance.  This became true in many cases with our union.  We grew from 10 men of vision to nearly 100,000,000 members at our peak.

I recently attended a meeting of labor leaders who have recognized that the numbers game is necessary to be effective in any area.  To have a chance for serious input and have our needs addressed we must secure the numbers that are not easily ignored.  We now understand that concept.  I want to some day leave this Local Union in a better position to represent electrical workers that it was in 1968 when I started the Apprenticeship program.  That is a tough challenge, however, I am speaking to the exact person that can make it happen. YOU!  You are skilled, you are in demand and you are an electrical worker.  Consider the possibilities of collective strength if (when) we all unite in our trade as was the dreams of the first organized electrical workers.  One person can make a difference when that one person aligns himself/herself with others of like minds.  If you are interested in having a forum in which open dialogue is available to make an informed decision on collective bargaining, then please call this office and a time will be established for you either individually or in a group setting.  Your choice, but either way make the call.  You will be glad you did and so will the IBEW.

Every morning in the newspaper, and every evening on the TV news, we read and hear about issues, having a negative impact on the average hard working American. We have a government totally controlled by one Grand Old Party. That Grand Old Party, in my opinion, is totally controlled by Corporate America, either directly through their “selected” leaders and representatives or by their lobbyists. Through it all, we are witnessing the demise of the Middle Class.

There is a quote, pinned on my bulletin board, which I read everyday. The quote is so appropriate today, that I want to share it with you. It comes from a very famous member of that Grand Old Party.

“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country….Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”

Happy Holidays

Saturday, December 2nd at 2:00 p.m. is the Children’s Christmas Party here at the union hall.  Santa will be here to give out presents, maybe even some of his elves will be here helping out too.  We have decided to have light snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy.   Along with Santa’s gift giving, we will be having craft tables set up so the kids can make a little Holiday craft item to take home with them. In order to make sure we have the proper gifts for the children and also to make sure that we have enough food, we are asking everyone that would like to attend to please RSVP with the enclosed slip.   R.S.V.P. IS MANDATORY by no later than November 10th. It is very important to write down the names, ages, and gender of each child that will be attending. There is an age limit of 12 years old for Santa’s gift giving, however, older kids may come and enjoy the food, crafts and fun.   We have received quite a few responses so far and hope to have even more.

Also, our adult Christmas party is rapidly approaching.  It will be on Saturday, December 9th, 2006 with festivities beginning at 7:00 P.M. until ???? We will have the usual array of hors d’ oeuvres and finger foods and mixers for drinks will be provided however, you must B.Y.O.B.  As always, we will be giving out plenty of door prizes throughout the evening in addition to the    grand prize giveaway.  In order to be eligible for the grand prize, you must R.S.V.P and be present at the time of the drawing.  At the bottom of the children’s Christmas party R.S.V.P. slip you will find one for the adult Christmas Party.  Please fill it out and return it to the Union Hall no later than November 30.

Membership Dues

The IBEW Constitution, Article XVII, Section 1 states that, “L.U.’s shall collect dues from members either monthly or quarterly in advance.  The L.U. monthly dues shall be not less than fifty cents ($.50) in addition to applicable per capita and assessments due the I.O.”

Article XXII, Section 3 states, “A reinstated member shall not be entitled to any L.U. benefits until six(6) months after reinstatement.”

************************************

Do you pay your dues on time?  I can proudly say I don’t know of ever being late on my dues since becoming a Journeyman Wireman.  Once I remember not having it back via mail but the hall had the money.  Having your dues paid on time is having them paid by the first of the month, not the day of the union meeting.

I consider my dues to be my most important bill.  I have worked union since 1973 with the IBEW and have raised two children on the wages and benefits provided.  I bought a home and paid all my bills, electric, gas, water, food, etc. from the union wages I have earned.  I have health insurance and three pensions I am building for retirement.

Without my union ticket I can’t say any of this would have happened.  I am PROUD to have that ticket and will always keep it in good standing.

John W. Barrington

Apprenticeship Report

As you know, the holidays are just around the corner.  We here at the Don Morgan Electrical Academy want to wish all a very safe and happy Holiday Season!

Our 4th year class will be completing in December and 5th year class will start in January.  We have 18 students presently in our 4th year class and are looking forward to seeing them all graduate next August.  The JATC office is just about complete with all of the work that has been done in the last couple of months.  All of the landscaping is complete now and all we are waiting on is parking lot striping to be done, the restrooms to be built on the other side of the parking lot for the park and power up the parking lot lighting.

We are now taking names for a 30-hour OSHA class to be held in January.  Please contact me here at the office 386-322-6236 or 386-322-6237.  If you are interested in a particular type of training, call the office so we can make a list of what type of classes I need to get information on.  Also anyone that would be interested in becoming an instructor for a class please contact me here at the office or on my cell 386-257-2088.

We still have a couple of 2005 codebooks here at the office if anyone is in need of one.  We also have tabs for the codebooks available.  The cost of the codebooks are $75.00 each and the tabs are $15.00 each.

Have a Happy Halloween and a safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
