The Side-Cutter EAST COAST EDITION The Side-Cutter

  1. (C.) 250 kcmil. NEC Section 220-10(b). For continuous loading, the overcurrent protection and the conductor will both be sized at 125% of the continuous load. In this case, a 250A overcurrent device and conductor are needed.

  2. (A.) 10 feet. NEC Section 230-24(b). The code has clarified that the 10 foot measurement at the building is to the lowest point of the drip loop of a service drop.

  3. (A.) 250 kcmil. NEC Section 110-14(c), Table 310-16. Since the conductor has 90 degree C insulation, the 90 degree C ampacity from Table 310-16 can be used for ampacity correction. The conductor must be derated by 80% in accordance with Note 8 of the Notes to Ampacity Tables 0 to 2000 volts. Using a 250 kcmil, the calculation is 290A x 80% = 232A.
